Making the Right Choice for the Future of your Dental Health

You may well have seen on the television or read in the press about the biggest shake up of NHS dentistry since 1948 when it was first conceived. The British Dental Association and the profession at large have expressed grave concern about the effect on the dental health of the population. Despite these reservations, the Government has imposed this contract on dentists as of 1st April 2006. The new contract has removed the concept of registration and continuing care.

Under the new system, there is no guarantee that you can continue to be seen in one practice if that practice has reached “capacity” at your next due appointment! Each Primary Care Trust has allocated a finite quota (contract value) of NHS work that can be carried out at each practice. The emphasis seems to be on access rather than continuing care.

Our practice has agreed a contract to treat children and exempt adult patients at our Norbury practice. In addition to this, we have been allocated a separate contract to treat bona fi de staff of Mayday Hospital during our staff dentist session at the Hospital.

How does it affect you (from 1st April 2006)?

  1. If you are exempt from dental charges (i.e. on tax credit, income support etc.) or in full time education until 19 years of age, you are relatively unaffected.
  2. If you are a bona fi de employee (have an ID card issued by the Trust) of Mayday Hospital Trust, you can continue to see us at the Hospital during the staff dentist session.
  3. If you are a fee paying adult, unfortunately, you will no longer be able to see us under the NHS (unless you are
    category 2 above).

If you were (or are) category 3 above, how can you remain a patient of the practice?
You will be aware that in the last few years (despite the national trend), we had continued to treat our loyal group of patients on the NHS who have been coming to us ever since Dr Vasant took over the practice in 1979, and in some cases prior to that. We would very much like to continue that relationship and not only maintain but enhance the quality of care we have thus far offered. We have therefore introduced a Privilege Practice Plan for this group of patients (see Option 1 below). This Plan is only available to you if you have been a patient at the practice for at least two years and have no outstanding dental treatment from your last course (which should have been in the last two years also). Alternatively, you can choose to pay privately for each item of service (see Option 3 below).

OPTION 1 – Privilege Practice Plan - £9.90 per month

  • Six-monthly detailed examinations, including x-rays and checking for signs of oral cancer
  • Six-monthly scaling appointments visits to maintain the highest standard of oral health
  • Continual advice, coaching and discussion about options to suit your individual needs
  • 20% discount on dental treatments (10% for laboratory-based items)
  • A convenient monthly payment by Direct Debit
  • Worldwide Trauma and Emergency Callout Insurance
  • Redundancy Protection

Budget for your dental health and become a member of the practice for only £9.90 per month (less than 33p per day).

Please note: an initial administration fee of £9.50 will be collected with your first Plan payment only.

OPTION 2 – Private Treatments (fee-per-item)
You can choose to pay for each item of service individually. For your convenience, examples of the financial implications of the Plans are compared below:

Example Annual Plan Fees
Privilege Practice Plan Fee-Per-Item
OPTION 1 (£9.90 monthly) OPTION 2
Two six-monthly examinations Inclusive £55.65
Two six-monthly scaling appointments Inclusive £55.65

Two pain relief appointments Inclusive £50+ (variable)

Emergency Callout Insurance Inclusive Not included
––––––––––––––––
*£9.90 x 12

Total saving = £55.10
+ Up to 20% discount on further treatment
(see examples below)
*(Please note: an initial administration fee of £9.50 will be collected with the first Plan payment only).
In order to maintain high standards of oral and dental health, we would recommend regular visits to the practice so that we can spot problems early and monitor the effectiveness of treatments. We hope that you will see, therefore, that we have designed a scheme that enables us to provide you with the highest standards of service and enables you to budget monthly for quality preventive dentistry. Therefore, we firmly believe that Option 1 will be the best option for most of our patients.

Examples Of Other Items

Option 1 Option 2
